What is Mum’s sauce?
Mum’s is a hybrid between a gourmet bbq sauce and a hot sauce and is bursting not only with flavour but also heat. It started as a mild family recipe that I have been spicing up and modifying for the last 40+ years.
Our History
Our company is located in Vernon, BC and was started in 2011 with the encouragement of my daughter and her friends.
Our Story
With every great product, one expects to find a great story behind it right. Well, I cannot say that it’s the greatest story ever told but we think we have something rather special and this is our story.
As a mum, you are forever trying to reinvent meals for the family and modify recipes handed down. Meal planning is no small task and ketchup can’t always go on everything. They say spice is the variety to life so I knew there had to be more to life and family meals than ketchup and so the humble beginning of our hot sauce was born.
With an old family recipe as the base, I started to modify it from that point on. Who better to test things on than your own family! Yes, meal times began to heat up so to speak. With my family as the perfect judges, where could I possibly go wrong?
Besides, who do you know that will be more honest with you than your own family right! Sometimes there was too much honesty and wrong oh my, things certainly did go wrong. There were some days that breakfast for supper was a sure welcome.
Yet we persevered and kept developing the sauce as the years continued to roll by.
When we decided to move our family to the Okanagan 30+ years ago and make Vernon our home, the “hot sauce” came too. Though our family enjoys a great tasting meal, we tend to be more on the conservative side of the heat factor for the most part and so our Mum’s Original Sorta Hot became what it is today; a medium heat packed with flavour.
During the Christmas season and other gift giving occasions, we would often send out a more personal homemade gift of our family’s hot sauce. We always had requests for more as the emptied jars were returned.
The years continued to come and go and the children started getting older and eventually, as all kids do, moved out.
It wasn’t until our daughter Jenn moved out and started having regular BBQ’s over at her place that all the commotion and fuss started. The kids all started coming around asking for more of what they had dubbed “Mum’s Sauce.” “Hey you got any more of mum’s sauce?” “Hey, can I get some of mum’s sauce to take home” “Ya know, you guys should really sell this stuff, we’d buy it” It was a hit and so with that, “Mum’s Sauce” was born.
We sat down and talked seriously about moving the heat out of the kitchen so to speak. Instead of “if you can’t stand the heat in the kitchen, get out” it was “we love the heat from the kitchen, let us bring it to Yours!”
We spent a good year doing our research and finally rolled the finished product out in 2011. We were ready to be placed in every store that believed in our product and felt that we had something great to offer individuals and families alike. We did demos in stores and farmer’s markets and everywhere else we could. We listened genuinely to the feedback and responded. We felt, to reach more individuals, we had to develop additional levels of heat for the discerning palate. We had some palates looking for more heat and some for less. So was the birth of our Timid Hot and Darn Hot. After being asked several times what we were going to make next, we developed our Hot Ketchups; Spicy Hot (medium) and Herb & Garlic (very hot).
Since we believe in quality ingredients free of additives and artificial flavouring or artificial anything, we oversee all the operations and do quality control ourselves. Our belief is; if I wouldn’t feed it to my family, I certainly wouldn’t want to feed it to yours. You can be assured that it’s from our kitchen to yours.
We heard the calls and we are here to deliver. Through welcomed feedback, we have discovered Mum’s Hot Sauce can truly be used on anything you are willing to try it on. Open your mind and imagination to the possibilities. All of our Mum’s heat series are GLUTEN & MSG FREE. All ingredients used are KOSHER certified although our sauce is not.
Our youngest fan is 4 and our oldest is 94. Kid approved; both big and small! Fish like it, eggs like it, salad likes it, fruit like it and BBQ’s LOVE it!
Use our sauce on your “Favourite Anything”!
We have “Timid Hot” for the faint at heart; “Sorta Hot” for those more adventuresome; and “Darn Hot”for those who like to walk on the wild side! We have also added Hot Ketchup to our family of sauces. There is Spicy Hot for those that prefer a middle of the road heat that is full of flavour; and our Herb & Garlic Hot Ketchup for those who love a hot, flavourful heat.
